Reflections

Almost half-way through my eight week journey with UGA Extension in Athens-Clarke County, and I am having a blast.  When accepting this position I was unsure of what it takes to be part of an extension office, and all the day-to-day responsibilities. I asked those questions during my interview, but being in the office is completely different. I enjoy coming into the office with different tasks being handed to me, and each day is different than the last.  During my first week, Dr. Ney and Joanna asked me to sort seeds, and I was clueless when they asked me to sort them by cool and warm season. Luckily, they provided me with the information I needed, and told me which ones were cool and warm seasons. Then, I was asked to complete a task of creating a comment card for the garden that is located in the back of the extension office. If Dr. Ney did not provide some examples and guidance I would have been a little lost on how to make a comment card. In other words, I need to im...

No I in Team

Everyone in a workplace is important, especially those who have taken someone under their wings. This summer I was lucky enough to have Dr. Laura Ney and Ms. Joanna Wright take me under their wings. These two are amazing women who are Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agents, but they also come with Mr. Clarke whom of which is the mascot for the Athens-Clarke Extension Office.  Dr. Ney  will be completing her second year, with Extension, in just a few weeks. As the Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent for Athens-Clarke County, she has a wide range of responsibilities. She works with homeowners, farmers, farmers markets, community organizations and with researchers.  "My job is never boring. That is probably my favorite thing about this job," stated by Dr. Ney. Joanna is currently a graduate student at the University of Georgia. She has been the Athens-Clarke County Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Assistant for a little over two years. She helps coor...

First Week to a Fantastic Summer

Welcome to the adventures of  my summer internship with the University of Georgia Extension Office in Athens-Clarke County. My name is Catrina Chamberlain, and I am a third-year majoring in Agricultural Communications.  I am an intern under the directions of Dr. Laura Ney and Ms. Joanna Wright, and I will be assisting them around the office during the week. My main responsibilities are taking pictures for social media, creating content and helping at farmers markets, and  I mostly assist at the Marigold Market in Winterville, Georgia.  I come from a town that is 30 minutes south of the Atlanta airport, and many people thought that agriculture was mostly farming. However, I thought the same thing until I was an intern with the University of Georgia participating in the Young Scholars Program in the summer of 2018 and 2019.  During my first program,  I worked in the Entomology Department, where I conducted research on aphids, and their DNA sequences. In my se...
